Four people were killed and five others were injured late Sunday night in a crash involving an 18-wheeler and a van on Interstate 59 in Pearl River County. The crash occurred shortly before midnight in the southbound lane of I-59 in the McNeill community.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol said the accident occurred as the van apparently attempted to return to the interstate from an emergency lane.
Officers say the van driver told police the vehicle had mechanical problems earlier Sunday that required use of the emergency lane.
Nine people in the van were mostly relatives and were on their way home to Louisiana from a family gathering in Alabama.
Four people were ejected from the van, two of whom were trapped under the vehicle and a third was pinned under the truck.
The five injured, including three reportedly in critical condition, were taken to Crosby Memorial in Picayune.
Authorities say the 18-wheeler was hauling pipe to Texas. Its driver and passenger were not seriously hurt.
