Effective at the beginning of 2002-2003 school year, Mississippi children entering daycare and kindergarten will be required to be vaccinated against chicken pox.

"With these new requirements we should be able to get rid of chickenpox in the state," said State Epidemiologist Dr. Mary Currier. "And we should be able to stop any deaths or hospitalizations due to chickenpox in Mississippi."

Many parents may believe chicken pox is a relatively mild disease, but Currier says it can require hospitalization and even cause death.
