Gun Owners Urged to Use Locks

At a news conference promoting a statewide gun safety campaign, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley encouraged all gun owners to keep their weapons locked away.

"These tragic deaths and injuries can be prevented when gun owners are aware of and fully understand their responsibility to handle firearms safely and store them in a secure manner," said Riley.

Riley also announced a program to provide free gunlocks to citizens.

''Project Childsafe'' is a nationwide program funded by a U.S. Department of Justice grant.

The gunlocks may be obtained by contacting local police and Sheriff's Departments.
