The Alabama House has passed a bill to permit the posting of the U.S. Motto "In God We Trust'' on classroom walls in Alabama public schools.
The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Jimmy Martin of Clanton, said the motto would be posted on school walls at no expense to taxpayers. He expects the motto will be on signs or posters paid for by private organizations.
Martin said he feels having the motto hanging on classroom walls will send a positive message to students.
The bill passed the House 87 to 1 and now goes to the Senate. The only "no'' vote was cast by Rep. Laura Hall of Huntsville, who said she feels the legislature has more important issues to consider.
Mississippi lawmakers approved a similar bill in 2001.
