To Raise or Not to Raise Taxes?

Most Mississippi legislators are saying they won't raise taxes this year, but Rep. John Mayo says that attitude could hurt Mississippi in these tight budget times.

The Democrat from Clarksdale spoke to the House Ways and Means Committee Wednesday about his proposal to increase some taxes. He said he wants to add another bracket to income taxes, payable by people making more than $35,000 a year.

Mayo also said he wants to increase so-called "sin taxes" by adding another 30 cents to a pack of cigarettes and five cents to a gallon of beer or wine. That would be about 2.8 cents per six-pack of beer. Mayo himself is a beer drinker and says he wouldn't mind paying.

Even though his plan got a hearing, Ways and Means Chairman Percy Watson says he won't bring Mayo's bill up for a vote.
