State school superintendent, Dr. Henry Johnson, said Thursday it would be terrible to lose the progress Mississippi has made over the past several years.
The Mississippi House has already passed a bill approving most public school needs for the year that starts July 1, but without identifying funding sources. The bill also includes approval for a teacher pay raise.
Senators have not said when they will consider a school funding plan.
The two chambers have to finish writing all budgets by early May, but House leaders said they want to finish the schools' budget by early April.
April 15 is the deadline for districts to offer teaching contracts for the coming year.
