A Lauderdale County jury returned a guilty verdict Wednesday night against Joseph Eugene Osborne.
He stood trial this week for the murder of five-year-old Charles Hopkins. The jury deliberated for close to six hours.
"Nobody wins in this because we don't have Charlie back. There's no way to make Cindy (Hopkins) whole again because she'll never have her oldest son," said prosecutor Lisa Howell. "And I can't say that the family, speaking of Mrs. Hopkins' family, doesn't feel sorrow for Joey Osborne's family, because they're just that kind of people, but no one can ever bring her child back. She just is glad that justice was done."
Osborne told the judge that he will appeal the conviction, which carries an automatic life sentence without parole.
