Thirty-six-year-old Walter Dearmond from Jackson is behind bars after leading Lauderdale County authorities on a more than 30 mile chase into Kemper County.
The incident happened Sunday afternoon when Dearmond allegedly dodged a safety checkpoint on Pine Springs Road and Allen Swamp Road. Once upon the checkpoint, deputies say the driver took off.
"The pursuit lasted approximately 30 minutes going about 15 miles into Kemper County. During the course of the pursuit several items were thrown outside of the vehicle. When the vehicle stopped it went down a dirt road and basically went into the woods," says Major Ward Calhoun with the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
Once in the woods Calhoun says the two fled from the vehicle. While Dearmond was captured, the other suspect remains at large. The only description authorities have for him is that he is a white male.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the second suspect is asked to call Crimestoppers at (601) 917-8888.
