Grand Jury Convened

A Lauderdale County grand jury has convened for the first time this year. Over the next few days, jurors will hear almost 300 cases and decide whether there's enough evidence for the cases to go to trial.

District attorney Bilbo Mitchell said the number of bad check cases being considered is down from previous years. He gives the credit to a recent "roundup" of writers of bad checks.

"It's been a big success. For a month or so, it was almost to the point where the people who worked in the bad check unit couldn't keep up," said Mitchell. "Now it's gotten to the point where we're sending the ones that have not come in over to the sheriff's department and they'll be picking them up."

Felony bad checks are those written for over $100. The penalty for doing this is up to three years in prison.
