Designed to reduce voting errors, the Help America Vote Act of 2002 requires a limited form of voter identification for national elections.
The same issue is now a hot topic for state and local elections. Some say it is unfair to require only those registering by mail to show a form of ID at the polls.
"We are strong proponents of the Voter ID Act. We want the voter to be asked for ID at every election for every vote, and not for just a few be singled out under the HAVA Act with the federal act right now," said Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk, Donna Jill Johnson.
By conforming to the 'Help America Vote Act, Mississippi is set to receive $34 million in federal funds to help with election reform.
