Senate Votes on Ban

The Alabama Senate has approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriages in Alabama and keep the state from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states.

The measure passed the Senate 24 to 1 Thursday afternoon. It now goes to the House for consideration.

Alabama law already prohibits same-sex marriages. But the sponsor of the legislation, state Sen. Hinton Mitchem, said putting a ban in the state Constitution would send a stronger moral message.

If Mitchem's legislation is approved by the House, then it would go before Alabama voters in a statewide referendum in November.
