More than 200 employees at Mississippi State University have retired early under a new incentive program.

Mississippi State started the program this year to save money.

The program was authorized this year by the state Legislature.

According to the state College Board at the close of the fiscal year on June 30, 221 Mississippi State employees had retired.

That's up from the 105 a year ago.

The early retirement program allows colleges to offer cash bonuses to eligible workers.

Mississippi State officials have estimated the retirements will reduce the payroll by about $5 million a year.

The University of Mississippi had 124 retirees and the University of Southern Mississippi had 54.
