The Meridian City Council Tuesday accepted a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.
It will pay for the hiring of a police officer for duty on city school campuses.
"The school system will decide where that officer is during the school day. But he will have full policing authority on a campus. As you know, their security does not have the full policing authority that a Meridian police officer has. It's no impact to our budget," said Mayor John Robert Smith.
The City Council also approved $20,000 to buy the former Con Sheehan building in the African American historic district in Meridian. It will be restored using another grant.
