Nearly 800 people gathered in Jackson this weekend for the State Republican Convention.

Jim Herring was re-elected chairman of the Mississippi Republican Party during the convention, which was held Saturday at the Crown Plaza in Jackson, Miss.

Gov. Haley Barbour and his wife Marsha spoke to a crowd of hundreds Saturday at the state Republican convention in Jackson. Barbour says this event gives the party a chance to reorganize and renew its values. Delegates from every county in the state were on hand. Both the Republican and Democratic parties hold state conventions every four years to elect party leaders.

"We've had a tremendous set of county conventions this year. You can see from the enthusiasm here from the fact that half the people that are delegates of the convention have never been to a state Republican convention before. It shows the growth of the party," said Barbour.
