Riley Signs Budget Bills

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley Thursday signed into law the $1.4 billion General Fund budget for non-state agencies.

The budget takes effect on Oct. 1. The governor signed a 26 cents per pack increase in the state cigarette tax on Tuesday, which is supposed to generate $88 million annually to help fund the state Medicaid program.

The Legislature passed both bills Monday, the final day of its 2004 regular session. Both bills were worked out in negotiations between Riley and legislative leaders.
