Volunteers Tackle Trash

With brooms, shovels, and trash bags in hand, the volunteers for Meridian-Lauderdale County Keep America Beautiful set out to clean up downtown Meridian.

"We are very excited about the groups that have come out to help us cleanup downtown. We are mainly focusing on cleaning up around the flower beds," said KAB coordinator Beverly Knox. "We have had complaints of downtown looking trashy, so we asked businesses to give us volunteers."

Keep America Beautiful asked local businesses for volunteers and they responded. Over sixty people showed up early to begin the cleanup and more were expected throughout the day.

"I see it as a way of giving back to my community. There is a lot of work that needs to be done to our environment and it helps improve and welcome visitors here. We want it to look nice for the visitors to come through. We want to welcome them to the city of Meridian," said volunteer Margaret Cole.

Knox said it's also an effort to make Meridian more appealing to outside industries. The idea is that a clean city will bring in more big business.

"Of course, now we are portraying image as a concept for Meridian and Lauderdale County. So as perception, we want to make sure that we are clean," Knox said. "We realize that cleanliness attracts industry."
