Smith: "We Need to Get Serious"

There has been talk in Congress about providing security for America's railroads similar to that at the airports.

Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith, former chairman of the Amtrak board, said he doubts it will happen.

"Unfortunately, it may take an incident, a disaster in this country before we face the fact that it costs money to secure any infrastructure, air, rail, highway," said Smith. "It's time we get serious about protecting this country."

Smith said the Mississippi Congressional Delegation has supported funds for railroad security but Congress has failed to act.
