Several hundred onlookers joined federal and state officials in honoring retired Congressman Sonny Montgomery, 83, who served 30 years in the House of Representatives.
The plane has been renamed the "Spirit of G.V. 'Sonny' Montgomery.'' It's the newest transport aircraft for the Mississippi National Guard. Montgomery retired from the guard as a major general.
National Guard officials credit him as a major reason for the C-17s coming to Mississippi. It and seven others like it are stationed in Jackson, Miss.
Montgomery received a lengthy standing ovation, and U.S. Senators Trent Lott and Thad Cochran read letters from President Bush and former President George Herbert Walker Bush.
Montgomery said seeing his name on the aircraft is a humbling experience.
