Lawmaker Logjam

The House voted 60 to 59 Thursday morning to send a lawsuit limitations bill into final negotiations, but several hours later, the Senate refused to enter talks.

Leaders in that chamber say lawmakers could spend weeks negotiating, only to see a bill killed on a technical point when it goes back to the House.

Gov. Haley Barbour is siding with the Senate. House Speaker Billy McCoy said the Senate is wasting taxpayers' money. Senate President Pro Tempore Travis Little said the House is wasting the money.

Both sides return to the Capitol Friday morning. Legislators are expected to take the Memorial Day weekend off.

At some point, McCoy said they'll start work on another bill. The governor said he wants a bill that includes caps on pain-and-suffering damages and features to protect what he calls "innocent sellers" of products.
