Representatives of Meridian Redevelopment Authority, Tourism, and Economic Development joined Board of Supervisors president Joe Norwood and Mayor John Robert Smith for a photo opportunity on 5th Street.
"As evidence of interest in Meridian, we packed 19,000 ditty bags for reunions and family meetings and gatherings last year. So the interest is here, the support is here and we're looking forward to seeing the finished product," said tourism director Wanda Grabert.
Meridian's historical African-American district stretches covers 23rd to 26th Avenues and 4th to 6th Streets in downtown Meridian.
