UWA Has New Chairman

Alex Saad of Mobile, a trustee for the last five years, was elected Monday to succeed Mann Minus.

Saad was one of the trustees who voted in March 2003 to oust Minus as chairman. The board spent the ensuing months split into two bickering factions, leading the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in December to place UWA on one-year probation.
An SACS team will visit UWA in September to gauge whether the school has resolved its problems.

UWA President Dr. Richard Holland said freshman applications for the fall were down three percent as of May 31, even though undergraduate student enrollment for the spring semester was a record 1,532 students. He blamed the decline in applications on the probation.
