Student Chosen National Delegate

Lauren Pedroso of Meridian was elected by her peers during “Girls State” in Hattiesburg.

Girls State lets high school juniors learn hands-on about how state government works.

"My inspiration has always been to be a physician, but coming here has taught me more about government. It has taught me, I know when I get old enough to vote, how the government works," said Pedroso.

"Not everybody's out to get everybody. It kind of goes back to what Amy Tuck said about the turtle on the fence. You have to have someone to get you there, and they were behind me 100 percent," said Courtney Caples of Moss Point, who was elected governor of Girls State.

Girls state allows students to run for election, pass legislation and get acquainted with state leaders.
