Phyllis Kennedy, director of the Department of Industrial Relations, said so far this year the state has a 5.8 percent jobless rate.
The May figure represents approximately 126,600 unemployed Alabamians, that's about 1,300 more than the previous month.
Nationally, the unemployment rate for May was 5.6 percent, unchanged from April.
The department said Washington County recorded the highest unemployment rate at 16.3 percent, while Lowndes and Wilcox counties tied for second with a jobless rate of 13.3 percent each.
The lowest unemployment figure was Shelby County's 2.4 percent followed by Blount County at 3 percent and Clay County with 3.3 percent.
