Commissioner Spell announced the campaign at a Wal-Mart in Madison, Miss.
Spell said an acre of blueberries can produce up to 12,000 pounds of fruit. He said blueberries currently bring between 75-cents and $1.00 a pound.
While wild blueberries have always grown in areas of the state, Spell says the fruit became an industry after Hurricane Camille in 1968 wiped out much of the Tung Tree industry.
The commissioner said farmers turned to the fruit as a new source of income.
