Out of all the elementary school principals in Mississippi, Oakland Heights principal Dr. Kim Benton was chosen by the National Distinguished Principals Program in Washington, D.C.

"I'm not sure I'm deserving of the honor, but I am appreciative of the opportunity to represent our state," said Dr. Benton.

Although Dr. Benton may not be sure whether she deserves the honor, teachers and staff at Oakland Heights certainly are. .

"She's an excellent principal. She takes care of her teachers and the children at our school," said Oakland Heights teacher Lydia Boutwell.

"It's a wonderful award for her, but it's not surprising," said Sandra Crawford, a literacy coach. "She is most deserving. I think it's great."

Crawford attributes the school's success to the leadership of Dr. Benton.

The NDP Program recognizes elementary and middle school principals who set high standards.
