Richalnd police say Richard McMullen, 28, is being held in the Rankin County Jail on a $100,000 bond after being charged with sexual battery. He was arrested last Friday.

McMullen was a physical education and health teacher and assistant football coach at Florence High School. Principal Tony Martin said McMullen left last year to pursue a job at another school.

Police have not released specific details on the sexual battery charge or any information about the alleged victims or whether they are current or former students at Florence High.

Lauderdale County superintendent David Little said the school board approved McMullen's hiring at its June meeting, but he did not have a contract with the district.

Little said the district will consult with its attorney on what to do next. The superintendent said a background check on McMullen produced no negative information. The charges in Richland were filed two weeks ago.
