Gov. Ronnie Musgrove has appealed the denial of federal emergency funding to help Mississippi wage war on West Nile-toting mosquitoes.

The governor's spokeswoman, Lee Ann Mayo, says Musgrove filed the request Wednesday for $8.1 million.

Musgrove says the federal aid will reimburse communities for their mosquito control efforts.

Meantime, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded $700, 000 to the state Department of Health Wednesday.

This money is part of nearly six point four million dollars allotted to health departments in 16 states for medical purposes and education about the virus. The CDC funds cannot be used for direct preventative measures such as spraying pesticides that kill mosquitos.

There have been three West Nile virus deaths in Mississippi, one each in Pike, Madison and Hinds counties. As of the most recent report, there have been 91 confirmed cases in the state.
