Heavy winds and rain hit portions of Meridian and Collinsville just north of town around 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

Trees were knocked down in the Old 8th Street road area. That's where Deputy Tony McMahan's patrol car was hit by a tree.

"It was raining so hard and hailing, you couldn't even see to drive, and then I stopped for a minute and the next thing I knew the tree was on top of my car," said McMahan.

Many trees and power lines were downed in the Tanglewood Drive area and Highway 19 North.

Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said Old 8th Street Road from Whippoorwill Road North to Woods Road was expected to remain closed for an undetermined period of time.

Both power and phone crews were working to restore service.
