The Reverend Hope Morgan Ward will become the first female resident bishop of the Mississippi Area of the United Methodist Church on Sept.1.
Ward, who is superintendent over the denomination's Raleigh, North Carolina District, was selected over the weekend to succeed retiring Bishop Kenneth Carder.
Ward has served as director of Connectional Ministries for the North Carolina Conference and pastored churches for 16 years.
The Reverend Claire Dobbs, associate pastor at Oxford-University United Methodist Church, said Ward's episcopacy could be an encouragement to present and future female clergy.
