A Meridian man has been ordered to pay more than $6,000 in fines for importing 24 illegal European wild boar from Canada to Mississippi.
Lauderdale County Judge Frank Coleman in June found Charles Clearman guilty on 24 counts of importing the illegal hogs.
Officials say Clearman imported the hogs in 2001 to sell them here in Mississippi.
Besides the fine, Clearman was sentenced to a 10-day suspended jail sentence and his hunting and fishing privileges were suspended for two years.
Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks officials said Clearman was sentenced on two of the counts and the remaining 22 counts will be suspended provided he pays the fines on time.
Officials said Clearman also failed to comply with Mississippi Department of Agriculture regulations regarding proper entry permits and testing of imported animals for diseases.
