Three teenagers died and two others were injured when their sports utility vehicle ran off state Highway 427 and hit a tree around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Sergeant Ronnie Carter said the accident occurred less than a mile south of Edinburg in Leake County.
Carter identified the victims as Matthew S. Holdiness, 17, and Casey Ellington, 16, both of Kosciusko, and Ryan Tally, 17, of Tupelo.
Carter said no one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
"At this point we don't know if alcohol was involved. Actually, we're trying to contact people that may have had contact with the occupants of the vehicle before they left where they were," Carter said. "So, any information would help us determine maybe what the cause of the crash was."
Carter said Holdiness was the driver of the 2000 Isuzu Rodeo. He said two others, Kyle C. Young and Lucas King, both 17 and from Kosciusko, were airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where their conditions were not immediately made public.
