It's now less than a week before classes begin at the University of West Alabama and the school's newest dean is settling into the job.
Dr. Michael Cooke was recently appointed as dean of UWA's College of Liberal Arts.
Cooke said one of his main goals is increasing diversity in staff and curriculum.
"It's vital for people to understand their roots. It's also very important because we're part of a global village and so, not just talking about African American Studies, but also looking at Latin America," said Dr. Cooke. "Looking at Africa, looking at other parts of the world like Asia. We just need more diversity in general, not just simply focus on African American culture."
Classes at UWA begin Monday.
