Evans Hailed as Real Hero

Mary Evans is an LPN clinical nurse at Newton Regional Hospital in Newton, Miss.

Evans was honored for her actions Jan. 31, 2004, when she risked her life to rescue three children from a burning house in Hickory.

She entered a burning house more than once to rescue three children trapped inside. When Evans couldn't gain entry through a door, she broke a window.

Evans won the American Red Cross and nursing Spectrum Nurse Hero Award. She was nominated by the South Mississippi Home Care and Hospice Organization.

Evans' award will be presented by Vice President Dick Cheney at a ceremony in Washington, DC, on Sept. 13.
