Passion Remains for Film

The Passion of the Christ is one of the most talked about movies of 2004 and one of the most successful of all time. It became available on DVD for the first time Tuesday.

Long lines outside of theatres in February marked the opening of the film about the last hours of the life of Jesus Christ, directed by Mel Gibson.

Lecisha Short of Suncoast Video at Bonita Lakes Mall said over 200 copies of the movie were pre-ordered there since June 1. Local rental outlets have also taken the same steps to ensure that plenty of copies are available.

"Because it's a great movie and it shows what Jesus Christ did for us," said Debbie Harrison, describing why she wanted a copy of The Passion of the Christ. "Because he loves us and all the pain and suffering he went through for us."

During its $30 million production, many critics said they believed the movie would be a flop. However, The Passion went on to gross over $609 million worldwide. It stands to make many millions more through DVD sales.

"I didn't get a chance to see it in theatres, so I wanted a copy of it to watch at my convenience," said Meridian shopper Wanda Lovette.
