United Blood Services in Meridian is dealing with a unique problem that has impacted the area's blood supply.

A refrigeration unit that keeps donations fresh until they can be used malfunctioned.

At this time, UBS says it has an emergency need for all blood types to re-stock the shelves.

"We have other sister blood banks that are helping us right now at this time. But our main objective right now is to get our inventory back up to where it needs to be so we can feel a little bit more comfortable, and we won't have to rely on other blood banks in this area to meet the patient needs currently at the hospitals," said UBS' J.W. Chapman.
