Many kids dream about getting to grow up and become a firefighter.

Whether it's the the thrill of battling the fires, or the idea of saving people's lives, firefighter is one of the most popular career choices for very young kids.

This week, some of them got a first hand look at just what the job is all about. They also got to learn a little bit about fire safety.

They were asked, "What would you do if your house caught on fire but you couldn't get out the window?"

"Go out the door," said Jadaviane Morris.

But what if the door handle was hot?

"I'd try to run through the window," Morris said.

Camp Fire Academy, a new summer camp for children started by the Meridian Fire Department has taken a week to show these kids every safety trick in the book.

"We have had tons of activities for the kids this week," said fire prevention specialist Ginger Hand. "The rock climbing wall. Coming out this afternoon we have an obstacle course. We have had the SWAT team demonstration; we've learned about fire trucks. We've learned how to escape your house if it is on fire."

The kids even enjoyed a day playing with fire hoses. Of course, it was all so they could learn how to put out fires.

Erin Brown said the coolest thing was getting wet. Kimberly Black liked getting to play with the water hoses and how to use them.

The most important thing the kids have learned this week is how to be a little bit safer at home.

After completing the final obstacle course, the kids graduated from Camp Fire and were presented with certificates. The Meridian Fire Department plans on holding two sessions of Camp Fire next summer.
