Jackson, Miss. Friends and political allies are remembering former Mississippi Gov. Bill Allain as an intelligent man who challenged the power structure and fought for people who couldn't afford lobbyists.

About 200, including current and former elected officials, gathered in the Capitol rotunda for a memorial service Friday. An American flag draped the coffin of Allain, who was a Korean War veteran.

He died Monday at age 85.

Allain was a Democrat who served as attorney general from 1980 to 1984 and governor from 1984 to 1988.

Vice President Joe Biden sent a letter of condolence that was read aloud Friday. The former Delaware senator said he and Allain became friends when the Mississippian supported his unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.

Allain will be buried Saturday in his hometown of Natchez.
