A Democratic candidate has entered the race for mayor of Meridian.
Rod Amos announced Friday that he's running. Amos said he's most concerned about Meridian's crime, declining quality of life and the city's financial health.
Amos says unless those problems are fixed, Meridian will continue to fall short of its potential.
"I'm very concerned about the direction that the city is going in," said Amos. "And I believe with my background and experience I have the qualifications to lead the city in the right direction and to bring the proper elements together in order to better our city."
This would not be Amos' first elected office. He has also served on the Lauderdale County Election Commission.
Incumbent, Cheri Barry, a Republican, is seeking re-election.
The qualifying deadline for all municipal candidates is Mar. 8. The primaries are May 7. The general election is June 4.
