Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

In preparation for state tests in May, students at West Hills Elementary School were put to the test in an unconventional way.

Fifth grade teachers created their own version of 'Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?' with contestants from fifth grade classes and people from the community.

While the students were playing a game, they were also studying for the MCT2, which is right around the corner.

"It was created utilizing the sample test items," said principal Candi Robertson. "Usually, basically when you're around during the testing time, it's the usual drill and kill. And we wanted to get our students pumped, and we wanted to give them something different."

As the five of us took our seats for a round of "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader," different emotions ran through us.

"I'm nervous, excited, worried because I want to win," I said. "I am smarter than a fifth grader. At least, I hope so."

As we each answered our questions, mostly wrong, we could tell these fifth graders came prepared and enjoyed beating us.

Despite my photographer, Allen Ballint, attempting to cheat, he was caught, and not much help.

"This gives them a chance to come in before their peers. No one had a chance to study," said principal Candi Robertson. "There were just sample test items that were given and they had to use those skills that their teachers taught them throughout the year. And it just gave them a chance to showcase that in front of our parents, our teachers, and our community members today."

To make sure the students knew the skills needed, each student had to explain why they picked a particular answer.
