Lauderdale County, Miss. The Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department says it is investigating an alleged sexual assault at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Lost Gap.

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says the prison notified the sheriff's department on Thursday of the incident between two male inmates. Calhoun says deputies are currently investigating the allegations and any evidence or information gathered will be presented to a grand jury for consideration.

"Quite often you hear of these types of things," Calhoun points out. "Obviously, you have an environment where the people are locked up together, where they are sometimes in seclusion for several hours between headcounts. And there are times when there are individuals who are going to make these types of assaults on other individuals."

No charges have been filed at this time. A spokesman for the prison tells us the alleged incident is currently under investigation.
