Be Prepared for Cold Weather

Meridian, Miss. East Mississippi's first freeze could come as early as this weekend. Now is a good time to start preparing for winter.

Many of us are starting to turn on our heaters for the first time in several months. But are those heaters ready?

Gas heaters especially need to be checked to make sure the lines are in good shape and gas pressures are safe, with no leaks.

"The first thing we always advise a customer today is have a professional check out their systems," said Chad Vaughn of The Service Company. "It's always a scary thought to flip that switch from cooling to heating and hope that it comes on. Those that are using heat pumps a lot of times have electric heat strips in them, and over the summer, will collect dust on those strips, both gas and electric. And it gives off a scary smell to begin with."

Vaughn says its also important to check the insulation around heating ducts and pipes to make sure your system is running at maximum efficiency.

Cold air often gets in and warm air escapes through doors and windows.

"The best thing you can do is use weather stripping around your doors and windows to make sure all your gaps are sealed underneath your doors.," said Randy Thomas at Lowe's.

It's also important to keep your filters changed in your heating units so they can properly circulate the air in your home.
