Meridian, Miss. Mayor Percy Bland says he requested a letter of resignation of from police Chief James Lee Monday. He says the chief hasn't submitted that letter, so he has fired Lee.
Bland says there has been a "loss of confidence in his (Lee's) ability to lead the department." And he said the firing is not in relation to recent Equal Opportunity Officer findings against Lee for creating a hostile work environment.
The mayor's remarks came after Tuesday's city council meeting.
Reacting to the news, Ward 2 City Councilman Dustin Markham said he was shocked but supports the mayor if this action moves the city forward.
Assistant Chief Buck Roberts has been named Interim Police Chief.
