Hazlehurst, Miss.

Bond has been denied for the second man charged in the slaying of a Mississippi woman and her 7-year-old son.

30-year-old Cedric D. Mason of Jackson appeared Friday in Copiah County Justice Court. He's charged in the deaths of Atira Hughes-Smith and her son, Jaidon Hill. It was not immediately clear whether Mason has an attorney.

Mason was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts each of capital murder and kidnapping.

Timothy L. Burns was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of murder and arson.

No charges had been filed in the slaying of Hughes-Smith's husband, Laterry Smith, who was also killed.

The three family members' bodies were found Tuesday, days after their burned vehicle was found in a remote area southwest of Jackson.
