Brush Fire Gets Out of Hand

Lauderdale County, Miss.
Lauderdale County volunteer firefighters were able to save several homes from a wildfire Friday afternoon.

When Bailey and Northeast fire departments responded to a structure fire on Head Start Road near the Bailey community, a storage building was fully involved.

Fire coordinator, Allan Dover, says a resident unaware of the burn ban started burning leaves and brush, and the wind quickly spread the flames, threatening seven or eight other homes and structures.

"Even though we received snow and moisture on the ground, and we're predicted to receive more moisture next week due to the high winds, it's drying out the top ground clutter real fast," said Dover. "So therefore, there's still a threat of outside burning being able to get out of control. We will be leaving that ban in place, and re-examining once we see exactly how much rain we receive next week."

There were no injuries due to the fire. The storage building and its contents were a total loss.
