The state of Mississippi has some interest in possibly upgrading the weapons used by the Department of Public Safety.
Gov. Phil Bryant met with a gun manufacturer in Meridian and actually tested some of the newest weapons available on the market.
The governor and law enforcement agencies checked out the firearms at Modern Outfitters, where they received some instruction before firing.
"This is a state-of-the-art weapon, both for close contact and to protect the officer," said Bryant. "What you've got to have is, immediately, if the suspect is endangering one of our officer's lives, to be able to stop that immediately. So it was very interesting to have not only the knowledge of the manufacturer of the weapon, to be able to test it also."
Bryant is a former deputy sheriff. He said anyone buying a weapon for protection should undergo a gun safety training course.
