COFO Building Demolition Gets Final Approval

Meridian, Miss. A local historic building has gotten final approval from a city board for its demolition.

The Meridian Historic Preservation Commission has authorized the demolition of the Fielder and Brooks Building, also known as the COFO (Council of Federated Organizations) Building.

The owners of the building plan to tear it down because of severe structural problems.

The building housed many civil right activities during the 1960s. COFO was a coalition of major organizations operating in Mississippi.

"Its historic significance means a lot to the City of Meridian and the African American community," said Mayor Percy Bland in a written statement. "However, the building is private property and had already deteriorated tremendously well prior to any efforts of this administration."

Bland says the city plans to memorialize the site in some way after the demolition.
