West Point, Miss. Police Chief Tim Brinkley says he has called in the FBI to help investigate an Aug 23. assault on a white man in West Point, Miss., allegedly by a group of black people.

The injured man, 32-year-old Ralph Weems, was hospitalized and put in a medically-induced coma according to reports.

Brinkley says 22-year-old Courtez McMillian of Okolona has been arraigned on an aggravated assault charge, with bond of $250,000. He says an attorney will be appointed if McMillian doesn't hire one. Brinkley said Tuesday that more arrests are expected.

David Knighten says he and Weems, who are white, apparently were followed Saturday from a restaurant where Weems argued with black patrons to another restaurant where Weems was beaten.

A hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday that Weems remained in fair condition.

Brinkley says a grand jury will decide whether to charge McMillian with a hate crime.
