Child, Family Reunite

A Meridian family enjoyed a reunion with its youngest member Friday morning.

Jessica Sumrall was able to visit with her toddler daughter, who has been undergoing treatment at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson.

Jamyiah will be three years old in June. Because she was born with a heart defect and has a chronic lung disease, her life has been spent in hospitals.

But Batson hospital made arrangements to bring her home for a visit.

"I was thinking if we can bring her home for a couple of hours so the whole family can get to meet her. And I see now it did happen and I'm very happy about that. And I will be sad because she has to go back," said Jessica Sumrall.

"Jamyiah is a very special, beautiful child as y'all can see. She is sassy. She knows what she likes and how she likes it. This means so much to bring her home, for her to see her brother and her sister and her mom," said Batson child life specialist, Tiffany Key. "And the reason we do this is we promote family-centered care. We're not just providing for the child. We're promoting the whole family. And it's about bringing families together no matter what challenges stay in the way."

Sumrall said she hopes Jamyiah can someday come home to stay. That's also Batson's goal.
