Choctaw Tribe Takes Aim at Obesity

Choctaw, Miss. The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians is hoping to make a big dent in the state's obesity problem over the next few months.

The tribe brought a health fair to Golden Moon Casino Friday, to allow tribal members and Pearl River Resort employees to sign up for a weight loss competition.

There will be a prize pot of nearly $11,000 for the winners.

"For Mississippi, our obesity rate is high. We are known to be one of the most obese states," said Dawn Kempthorne, vice-president of resort operations. "But also here, we have a very high population of people who have diabetes."

Two hundred people were signed up in just the first few hours of the event Friday. Officials hope to have a couple of thousand signed up eventually.
