Civic Club Donates to Charities

The Meridian Downtown Optimist Club awarded $5,000 to a handful of charities.

One thousand dollars each went to Christmas with a Cop,
Wesley House, Salvation Army Angel Tree, Cans for Kids and Toys for Tots.

Optimist Club member Dan Derrington says this is something the club does every year around the holidays.

"We've been real fortunate the last few years with our fundraisers. Each Christmas we try to give $1000 to five organizations that specialize in helping the youth of our community who might not have a Christmas otherwise," said Derrington. "We gave $5000 all total and we're thankful we have a lot of volunteers in this community that step up and can takes the funds that we give and provide a Christmas to kids that really need to have a good Christmas this year."

The Optimist Club's biggest fundraiser of the year is the annual Pancake Jubilee.
